Ytterbium: An Elemental Overview
Classification and General Appearance
Ytterbium is classified as a metal. It belongs to the lanthanide series, which are a group of rare-earth elements. At standard room temperature, Ytterbium exists as a solid. Its appearance is typically silvery-white, possessing a bright, metallic luster. The texture of Ytterbium metal is notably soft, making it both malleable (can be hammered into thin sheets) and ductile (can be drawn into wires).
Physical State and Thermal Characteristics
The transition from solid to liquid for Ytterbium occurs at its melting point. This element has a melting point of approximately 819 degrees Celsius. Further heating causes Ytterbium to change from a liquid to a gaseous state at its boiling point, which is approximately 1196 degrees Celsius. These thermal properties are characteristic of many metallic elements.
