Classification
Terbium is categorized as a metal. Specifically, it is a member of the lanthanide series, often referred to as rare earth elements. Its metallic nature distinguishes it from non-metals and metalloids.
Appearance and Texture
At standard room temperature, terbium presents as a silvery-white metal with a bright, metallic luster. It is relatively soft and exhibits malleability, allowing it to be hammered or pressed into thin sheets without breaking. It is also ductile, meaning it can be drawn out into a thin wire. This combination of properties is typical for many metals.
State of Matter
Under typical conditions of room temperature (approximately 20-25 °C or 68-77 °F) and standard atmospheric pressure, terbium exists in a solid state.
Thermal Properties
The melting point of terbium is approximately 1356 °C. This high temperature is necessary for the solid metal to transition into its liquid phase. The boiling point of terbium is considerably higher, estimated at approximately 3230 °C, at which temperature the liquid metal would vaporize into a gaseous state.
